Ethical Sourcing: Cultivating a Fair and Sustainable Future in Egypt

At Under the Nile, our commitment extends beyond creating high-quality products. We deeply value the people who bring our vision to life – from the dedicated farmers and skilled artisans to the diligent builders and sewers, and crucially, their families and surrounding communities across Egypt

Promoting Diversity, Equality, and Empowerment

Equality and diversity are the bedrock of our culture. We foster an inclusive environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and beliefs collaborate seamlessly every day. Our unwavering goal is to provide equal opportunities to all, actively eliminating any potential for discrimination.

We go the extra mile to support our women employees, understanding their unique needs. This includes providing convenient childcare facilities, offering the flexibility of working from home, and facilitating access to courses for acquiring additional skills. Furthermore, we prioritize their well-being by providing essential support and regular medical guidance sessions focused on reproductive health.

Fostering Fair, Healthy & Safe Workplaces

Our commitment to our people is reflected in our dedication to ensuring fair wages and cultivating healthy and safe workplaces for every individual we collaborate with, both directly and indirectly. To uphold human rights throughout our entire supply chain, we rigorously apply Fair Trade principles in all our purchasing practices.

This deep-seated commitment to safety and well-being has also led to the creation of the SEKEM Medical Center. This invaluable facility provides essential medical services, embracing holistic and integrative medical practices, for our employees and the surrounding community of over 40,000 individuals.

Championing Education and Literacy in Egypt

Recognizing that literacy is a fundamental human right, especially in regions where access to education can be challenging, we empower every employee with the opportunity to receive comprehensive reading and writing lessons. Addressing the critical need for improved educational access for young people in Egypt, the SEKEM School was founded in 1989. This esteemed institution encompasses primary, preparatory, and secondary levels, serving over 300 students.

Conveniently located approximately 37 miles northeast of Cairo, on the SEKEM campus, the school welcomes children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, including those of our employees and from neighboring villages and towns, fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning environment.

Furthermore, we provide essential vocational training to equip young people with skills highly sought after in the local labor market. Our Vocational Training Center, accredited since 1999, currently trains 180 students across nine in-demand professions, including mechanics, plumbing, carpentry, organic agriculture, and photovoltaic installation and maintenance (for solar energy technology). In light of the employment challenges in Egypt, this practical, hands-on training directly prepares students to launch their own successful businesses, paving their way towards financial security and a prosperous future.
